Working Together for the Sustainable Expansion of On-Demand Transportation in Saarland
On May 5, 2026, the first stakeholder workshop titled “On-Demand Transportation in Saarland” took place at the Ministry of Environment, Climate, Mobility, Agriculture, and Consumer Protection (MUKMAV) in Saarbrücken as part of the Saarmila research project. Under the theme “Working Together for the Sustainable Scaling of On-Demand Transport in Saarland,” representatives from the various flitsaar projects came together, including the MUKMAV, the ZPS, as well as transport companies, public transport authorities, and municipalities from the three flitsaar regions.
In an interactive exchange format, participants reflected on the goals, practical experiences, impacts, and challenges of on-demand transport in Saarland to date. Topics discussed included target groups, integration into the existing public transport system, technical integration, the contribution to climate protection, financing, and improving service quality through better accessibility and greater flexibility.
It became clear that on-demand transport can effectively complement public transport in the Saarland—especially where traditional scheduled services reach their limits, such as in rural areas or during times of lower demand. It can help make mobility more flexible, strengthen participation, and make public transport more attractive overall.
At the same time, the workshop demonstrated that successful further development can only be achieved through collaboration. This requires dialogue, trust, effective cooperation, and a willingness to learn from one another.
At the next workshop in September, the group of participants will be expanded to engage in dialogue with additional stakeholders about future visions for on-demand transportation in the Saarland.
